The Mirror has learned that Live Nation has tabled a multi-million pound offer for the icon to play the Olympic Park in East London
Promoters are set for a huge bidding battle to persuade David Bowie to make a sensational return to the stage after eight years.
The Mirror has learned that Live Nation has tabled a multi-million pound offer for the Ziggy Stardust icon to play the Olympic Park in East London next year.
The company has close links with Bowie’s legendary tour agent John Giddings who runs music agency Solo.
AEG are also expected to lodge an offer shortly, possibly to play Hyde Park.
Next year is the 50th anniversary of Liza Jane – it was Bowie’s first single released under the name Davie Jones with the King Bees when he was 17.
A source close to the Ashes to Ashes star said there were “currently no live dates planned” but did not rule out a stage return for The Thin White Duke.
Bowie, 66, has been delighted by the rave reviews and huge sales of his new album The Next Day – his first for 10 years. Many now hope he will want to perform the tracks live.
His last performance was on stage with Alicia Keys in 2006. He stopped touring after a heart attack on stage in Germany in 2004.
His guitarist Earl Slick recently said there were no plans in place for Bowie to tour before the end of the year – but intriguingly left the door open for 2014.
He said in June: “I get asked all the time. And I say ‘Do you know something I don’t know?’ Really though, there’s no big secret we’re keeping from everyone.
"There’ll definitely be no shows this year, I can tell you that. As for next year, who knows? There’s no conspiracy about a tour now, there just is no tour.
“As for whether I want him to tour, well, I always want to go out, I love to tour, but I’ve got my own thing going at the moment too.
“If he goes out on the road and I get the call, then all well and good. “
Fellow musician Nile Rodgers also discussed the possibility of Bowie touring soon – saying he was “full of surprises”.
Bowie’s profile was further boosted this year by an exhibition of his prized possessions at London’s V&A Museum.
It featured more than 300 objects including handwritten lyrics, costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs - and Bowie’s own instruments.
