The petition urges French voters not to ‘repeat Clinton vs. Trump tragedy.’

A petition signed by Hollywood actors Danny Glover and Mark Ruffalo calls on French voters not to repeat the “Clinton vs. Trump tragedy” and vote for left-wing candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon in Sunday’s first round of the presidential election.

The petition — also signed by leftist academic Noam Chomsky and Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler — says there is a strong chance France would have to choose “between status quo corporate establishment liberalism and xenophobic right populism. This was the scenario that elected President Trump in the United States. We don’t want to see this tragedy repeated in France, with terrible global consequences. It wouldn’t be farce. It would just be tragedy.”
The petition calls on French voters to “unite in the first round of the presidential election behind the Left candidate with the most support in the polls,” referring to Mélenchon, who is polling at 19 percent, only four points behind front-runner Emmanuel Macron.
Mélenchon tweeted at Lethal Weapon star Glover thanking him for his support.
The petition had 5,160 signatures as of 5:40 p.m. Brussels time on Wednesday.
