The clock's ticking towards US default - but some Western nations are wasting no time in turning east. China is catching their eye - and even America's closest ally, Britain, has been sending the country's top brass to woo Beijing. China earlier called on the world to start to, quote, 'de-Americanise'. Polly Boiko reports on the shifting attitudes.



Prominent opposition figure Aleksey Navalny and co-defendant Pyotr Ofitserov have been given a suspended sentence in their embezzlement trial. Navalny has indicated that his team is going to appeal the sentence.


America's National Security Agency could soon see its global survillance powers stunted, as foreign governments and firms move to bolster their cyber defenses. Brazil's leading the charge with an encrypted e-mail service, while Germany's biggest telecom company is planning to reroute users' data, away from the NSA's grasp. With the deadline looming US lawmakers have agreed on a deal to raise the country's debt limit, and reboot the government. It will now have to be approved by both Republicans and Democrats infighting between whom brought the world's richest nation to the brink of default.

The largest-discovered fragment of a Russian meteorite, weighing around 570 kilograms, has been lifted from the bed of Lake Chebarkul in the Urals. The huge meteorite chunk split into three pieces when scientists tried to weigh it. The precise weight could not be established because the heavy object broke the scales.
