Turkish police fired tear gas at demonstrators before retreating from Taksim Square in Istanbul on Saturday. In Ankara, a police vehicle hit two demonstrators who were crouched in the middle of the street, barricading themselves behind rubbish bins.

Almost a thousand have been arrested. What started as a peaceful sit-in against plans to revamp a park in central Istanbul has spiraled into a nationwide display of anger against the government.
