The return of PASOK president George Papandreou is expected by top executives of the party, in order for him to initiate an official discussion on the future. A month after his..
resignation as PM, Mr. Papandreou has not expressed a official stance on anything, and there are requests from within the party that there should be a meeting.

All this time, there have been continuing appointments made by candidates for the leadership of the party, either between themselves or with members. A bout of meetings had been started by the PASOK leader almost immediately after his resignation. Before leaving for South Africa, he had had discussions with Members Franciscos Parasiris, Yiannis Michelogiannis and Maria Kyriakopoulou.

The information reported yesterday morning on protothema.gr wants the President of PASOK convening the institutions of the party within the next week.

This past week, two out of the three "reformers", Andreas Loverdos and Diamantopoulou, met with Evangelos Venizelos and discussed the developments within the party. Reportedly, they agreed to make do with a little more patience ... to allow Mr. Papandreou to open up the debate as he sees fit.

How Members will choose a leader

The factors that will determine the final choice of each member will be threefold. The first is the personal interest of everyone, the second is the future of the party and the third is the perspective that will be given by each of the candidates on Greece’s exit  from the current crisis .

In individual conversations, MEPs reveal their anxiety about a possible triple divide of the party, so they insist on talking with stakeholders about leadership and the need for uniting public discourse. Self- criticism will also play an important role, while the presentation of ideological positions and principles that benefit the community will weigh upon developments.

Within this framework, the position to be taken by Mr. Papandreou is key. The delay is expected to only aggravate the situation, both within PASOK and in terms of the relations of the party with the social strata which seem to have left it to fend for itself.
