Any possibility of British involvement in a military campaign in Syria has been effectively ruled out after British lawmakers voted down the prospect in parliament, costing the US the nation's closest ally in a potential strike.


The US and British drive to launch a military operation against Syria has come up against new hurdles - both abroad and at home. The UN Security Council failed to agree on how to act - but Britain says, even without a mandate, an attack would be justified on humanitarian grounds. That's as high-ranking former military officials in Britain also warn against striking Syria.
