Millions of TV viewers in Germany have tuned in to see Chancellor Angela Merkel battle it out with her main political rival.Peer Stein-brueck aims to stop her becoming Europe's longest serving leader in this month's German election. Al Jazeera's Nick Spicer has more from Berlin.



Egypt's military has bulldozed 13 homes along the Gaza Strip border and caved in tunnels beneath them as a prelude to the possible creation of a buffer zone to reduce weapon smuggling and illegal militant crossings, angering residents who said they were evicted with no compensation, security officials and residents said on Sunday.Meanwhile, ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi is to stand trial for "incitement to murder", state media reported without giving a date for the procedings.Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba has more.

Kevin Rudd, Australian prime minister, has made a major campaign pitch to revive the Australian Labor Party's chances at elections this week. Rudd, who is far behind opposition candidate Tony Abbott in opinion polls, is promising tax breaks for small businesses and more work for local contractors on infrastructure projects if his government is re-elected. Andrew Thomas reports from Brisbane.


Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid leader and former South African president, has been discharged from hospital and has returned home after being treated for a recurring lung infection, according to government sources.This comes after a weekend statement by a family member that he had been discharged was denied by Mac Maharaj, the presidential spokesperson.Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Johannesburg.
