The Pope has left the Vatican City for the final time, arriving at Castel Gandolfo after a half-hour journey by helicopter and motorcade.
Benedict XVI left the Vatican after greeting his staff for the final time as he becomes the first Pope in nearly 600 years to step down as head of the Catholic Church.
The ancient bell of the Senatorial Palace of the Capitol - Rome city hall - rang out three times as Benedict left the Vatican for the last time at 4pm. The bell will ring again again at 7pm.
The Pope has also tweeted for the final time at the @pontifex account, writing at 4pm: "Thank you for your love and support. May you always experience the joy that comes from putting Christ at the centre of your lives".
