Riot police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse masked protesters in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, as demonstrations continued throughout Brazil. Unions are demanding better work conditions and tougher government measures to tackle inflation.
Tens of thousands of union members marched throughout the country, blocking roads and grinding traffic to a crawl in dozens of cities.

NSA leaker & former CIA employee Edward Snowden has asked for political asylum in Russia, saying he could not fly to Latin America, according to Human Rights Watch representative who met the whistleblower. Thirteen Russian and international human rights advocates and lawyers have gathered at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport for a meeting with Snowden.


The Orange order's major procession in Belfast has finished peacefully. 600 extra officers were brought in to bolster police in the city and they're still on hand in case tensions boil over later today. The march's route has been shortened this year, with a ban on an evening walk through a sectarian flash point. Unionist leaders have expressed outrage at the decision, but have promised to keep any protests peaceful.
